Traffic
Party Poker used to be the biggest poker site out there. But after closing to U.S. players and thereby instantly losing about 50% of its player pool, it isn’t anymore, but it’s still not too small or shabby by any comparison. With an estimated 500,000 active members (it used to be more like 5 million), about 9,000 can be found playing at the cash ring game tables and about 60,000 at the tournaments tables at peak hours. Party Poker has a large international player base, with its player pool widespread across the globe. This means that at any given time of the day, plenty of good action can be found.
Competition
Party Poker has looser, poorer players by most measures. Sharks would do here (though most seem to be patrolling other deeper waters). Newcomers to poker, amateur players who are happy to remain amateur, and light poker hobbyists who don’t take their game too seriously would all do well here. Because of all this, action is especially dense at the lower stakes tables.
Freerolls
One of PartyPoker’s nicest offerings is rookie-only freerolls, called “Bankroll Builders” or “Rookie $100 Daily Freerolls” promising some $30,000 awarded each month. Beyond that, PartyPoker runs at least $100,000 guaranteed in freerolls each month, with PartyPoker freerolls running every single day of the week. Among its regularly scheduled freerolls, PartyPoker has a monthly $5,000 freeroll tournament and more frequently $1,500 freeroll as well. There are even daily freerolls for free seats in their 50-Seat Frenzy qualifiers for free entry into their weekly $300K Guaranteed Sundays. There are also exclusive freeroll tournaments that players can only buy into with PartyPoints (the currency for PartyPoker’s player loyalty program).
Tournaments
PartyPoker hosts Scheduled tournaments and Sit & Go tournaments in Texas Holdem, Omaha Hi/Lo, and 7-Card Stud, with Sit & Go’s also in 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo. Rebuy tournaments are particularly big at Party Poker. All-in-all, Party Poker promises at least $6 million in guaranteed tournaments each month, including a $1 million guaranteed tournament held on the first Sunday of every month, and every Sunday finds another $300K guaranteed tournament running as well. Additionally, PartyPoker runs regular promotional tournaments, generally satellites into larger, often land-based, tournaments. There’s also a popular Deal-Making feature that allows players in heads-up play to strike a bargain outside the bounds of regular, traditional game play.
Software
The PartyPoker software moves along plenty speedily, and has shown itself to be consistently reliable in keeping a game running smoothly and uninterrupted. Multi-tabling (up to 10 tables at once), filtering of tables in the lobby, and the ability to resize tables are both nice touches, as is offline storage of hand histories a helpful feature too. All that having been said, there have still been reports of the occasional glitches, problems with the waiting list (which, when it works, is one of the best of all the poker sites), and issues with sound and graphics. The interface also leaves a bit to be desired. Lobby stats show average pot size, but no other helpful table stats (like flop percentages).
